Kingdom of Great Zimbabwe

Era
c. 1100 - 1450 CE
Region
Southern Africa
Modern Nations
Zimbabwe

A Shona civilization that built the largest stone structures in pre-colonial sub-Saharan Africa, controlling regional gold and Indian Ocean trade.

Culture & Society

Built by ancestral Shona peoples, Great Zimbabwe's dry-stone walls (built without mortar) enclosed a royal complex housing perhaps 18,000 people at its peak. The soapstone 'Zimbabwe Birds' became enduring national symbols. For decades colonial authorities falsely denied African authorship of the site, a myth thoroughly debunked by archaeology.

Contributions
  • 01Monumental mortarless granite architecture, including the Great Enclosure
  • 02The iconic soapstone Zimbabwe Birds
  • 03A gold-trading economy linked to the Swahili coast and the Indian Ocean
  • 04Evidence of long-distance trade with Persia, India, and China (recovered porcelain and beads)
  • 05Sophisticated cattle-based and agricultural economy
Interactions & Trade

Great Zimbabwe exported gold and ivory to the Swahili port of Kilwa, connecting it to Indian Ocean trade networks reaching as far as China. Chinese celadon and Persian glass found at the site attest to its global reach.
